Snow?!?

The batteries in my camera are dead and I don't have any replacements in the house, otherwise I would have taken a documented picture to prove my displeasure upon waking and greeting the world this morning.

We have SNOW!!

As in snow on the first morning of the girls' Spring Break! As in snow in April!! I know it's not completely unfounded, but come on!!

Enough already!! We are done. It is time to go, Mr. Winter. The boots are put away for the winter, as are the hats and gloves. It's time to take the hint and get lost.

We need to enjoy our "Spring" Break in every sense of the word...green grass, chirping birds, buds on trees, blooming tulips, warmer temps, and NO SNOW!

The nerve!!

More of the Same

I'm afraid that my blog is becoming a travel-ogue. You know, like testimonies in testimony meeting sometimes do. It's become a sort of chronological record of our goings on, a calendar in retrospect, a journal of events in the life of the Brown's. I say that like it's a bad thing or something. It's not really, I mean it'll be nice to go back a year from now and read about what we were doing in March of 2009, but it might not be so fun for you guys. Sorry if you're bored. I'm trying. I seem to be a dried-up well of blogging topic ideas lately. Wait a second, I know!, I'll blame it on being pregnant! Aha!! I hadn't thought of that before. The baby is sucking all of my creative ideas for blogging. Sorry, but you'll have to take it up with him/her, as the case may be. Tee hee.

So on to the travelogue...

This weekend was fabulous!! As in fan-freaking-tastic. It was so great I didn't want it to end. The only thing that kept me from refusing to let it end was the thought that we'd be able to have another one in only a week and a half from now. Phew! That was a close one.

As you know Mark had Spring Break last week, and that was nice. We went out to lots of lunches, got the last of our blinds put up, and took a hike around "The Dells", which is part of the Matthieson State Park, which is just a hop and a skip from Tonica. The Dells was pretty cool. Huge waterfalls cascading into a deep canyon that you'd never know existed had we not hiked into it. It got both of our heart rates up as there were many different elevations of hiking. We had a good time.

We let the girls skip school on Friday, and set off for Michigan after breakfast. We stopped at a Wendy's for lunch in Benton Harbor (how un-original), and I was struck with one of my first cravings. It was quite strange, it kind of snuck up on me. As I sat across the table from my daughters, they were both enjoying their happy meals of nuggets, fries with ranch, and chocolate milk. Yum, that chocolate milk looked delicious. I got up and got one for myself. It was extremely satisfying. (There I go with my commercial talk, Mark.) Craving #1: Chocolate Milk.

We pulled into Livonia around 5 pm. We immediately got off of I-96 at the Newburgh Road exit as we'd done a million times before to take a peek at the Bassett house. There were renters!! Other people living in our house! Isn't that such a weird feeling when you see OTHER people living in your house? Parking in your driveway? Hanging new curtains in your front window? Strange. We then drove towards Randolph and discovered (uh-oh!!) that SACC kids were on the playground playing. EEK!! The girls shrieked, they wanted to get out and see friends, and play, but we had a date with QDoba, and couldn't be late. We waved from the van...you can imagine the dramatics that ensued.

We then got back on the good 'ole Jeffries freeway to get to our beloved QDoba at the designated time. And it was glorious!! (That's right, I used the word "glorious" to describe a Mexican restaurant.) We were met by the warm, familiar aromas, and all of our family!! We got to dine with the Griswold's, the Day's, and the Grandparents. It was great. Can I just tell you I've really missed that?

We then grabbed some ice cream with the Day's at the infamous Ritters, which seemed like a good idea at the time, although we all shivered outside as we nibbled on our cones. It seems like it should be warmer than it is...why isn't it Spring yet?!?

We stayed with my parents, and on Saturday my Mom and I went to Leslie Goldman's baby shower (lovely and fun), while Mark, my Dad, and the girls went to the DIA. In Mark's words, "they were so horrible they didn't deserve Mexican Village, and they came directly home afterwards." Yikes.

Later on in the day, we went to Cole's 1st birthday party. Everything looked so cute, Erin had the house decorated in a Safari theme, but poor Cole had a high fever and we weren't sure what was going to happen. He perked up eventually and dove into his cute Lion cake and fun was had by all. It was so nice to visit with everyone. I still can't believe that baby is already 1!! The year has gone by too fast!

Later on that night, back at the little condo in the big woods, we enjoyed a little middle-eastern cuisine which satisfied a hankering I'd been having for some grape leaves and hommus. It was delicious. I wouldn't call it a full-blown craving though, just a hankering. It was yummy.

We made it to Church on Sunday morning to the Livonia Ward. It was nice to see familiar faces there. We had wanted to go to the Plymouth Ward, but 8:30 versus 9:00 made a big difference when it came time to wake up on Sunday morning. Ah well, maybe next time.

Now we're back home and things are back to normal, somewhat. We have another busy week, but then are heading back to MI. on Wednesday next week.

I already can't wait!!

Goings On

There I go again, neglecting the blog. I thought I had turned a new leaf there for a minute. Maybe creating new (old) habits takes more time than I thought.

Anyway, just thought I'd write up a quick post tonight to bring you up to speed on our going's on.

The weekend was fun. I got as far east of Tonica than I've been since I moved here. Since I am the new Ward Activity Day's leader, I got to attend the Stake Faith in God Conference in Joliet (we are in the Joliet Stake), which is about 50 minutes away--due east. I also got to attend with my very own Activity Day aged daughter, Maryn. It was a fun Mommy daughter day. We carpooled with two other girls and their Moms and made a day of it. The conference was very well planned and tons of fun. This is the first thing that Maryn has gotten to participate in and she was just so tickled. She felt so grown up. The first of the mini-classes was "babysitter boot-camp". She LOVED it!! She kept telling me how awesome she was going to be when the baby comes and she can do EVERYTHING!! I agreed wholeheartedly in regards to the diaper changing duties...hee hee. We also made cinnamon rolls, and CTR bracelets, and learned to sign (language) the song Choose the Right. After the conference was over, the other Ottawa members and us hit the Joliet Mall--CIVILIZATION!! I don't know what's wrong with me, but I felt like I was coming home. We ate at the food court, I had Sbarro Pizza!!!! And then we did some shopping. One of the other Mom's is expecting in August and she wanted to stop at Motherhood. That was actually fun for me too.

When we got home later that afternoon, Mark and Avery had been working in our yard. They were raking up pinecones in the backyard. Raking our yard...as in over an acre of pinecones. They both looked exhausted. It was a lot of work. We all chipped in and got the last of it done, and then had to head back "into town". We needed to buy a folding table and chairs because we were having some people over for dinner on Sunday.

We had one of Mark's home-teaching families and the missionaries for dinner after Church on Sunday. The dinner was yummy if I do say so myself, and the company was entertaining. They have a daughter that is the same age as Maryn and two older kids, as well as a baby girl. Their baby girl is exactly 7 years younger than her older sibling. Isn't that ironic?

Mark has had the week off for Spring Break. One thing about Mark is that he always keeps me guessing. I didn't even realize he had Spring Break until he told me Sunday night. He was all grinning from ear to ear after dinner and says, "so, whaddaya want to do tomorrow?" I was like "whaddaya mean?" and he was like, "I don't have to go to work..." Well then. It's all good. We've actually had a fun week.

We took a little drive down to Bloomington/Normal (CIVILIZATION!!) on Monday for lunch at the Olive Garden, and then a quick shopping trip at the Mall. We even had time to swing through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru on the way home. Ohhhh yeah!!

He's been dutifully checking items off of his "honey-do" list as well. He's gotten the rest of the mini-blinds up and awful 70's drapery down. He's also gotten the girls off to school every morning so that I can get some extra sleep in the morning. And he even accompanied me on my run on Tuesday. He kept me company and chattted to me while riding his bike. I wasn't the best of company in return (huff, huff, pant, pant), but I appreciated his encouragement. He really is such a good guy. I really like having him around.

Tonight Avery and I had a special date night. After the Conference with Maryn on Saturday I could tell that Ave was needing some 1-1 time of her own. So off we went tonight. We painted a flower shaped porcelain coin bank at the Mall and went to Claire's and the Pet shop, where she got to help the Pet shop workers with an adorable little Pug who kept trying to get out of the store. They told her to pick him up, and she was like, "I don't know how!" And they were like just pick him up around his belly, and she tried a few times, finally getting her hands around his chubby little belly and then held him out 3 feet in front of her the whole way back to his pen. She was a mixture of horrified and exhilerated. It was hilarious. She said, "his bones felt all wiggly and squishy in my hands." It cracked me up. After that, she was convinced she could take care of her own dog and that she NEEDED ONE ASAP!! After that (and some Purell), we went and got dinner at her choice, KFC. Oh well. She was happy as a clam, and that's all that matters. When we got home we had homework to do and then she says, "Mom, did you remember that my report on little blue penguins was due today?" "TODAY?!?" I said. She said "yeah, Mrs. Augspols says I better get it in tomorrow." So, we started on her penguin project around 8 pm.

They are now tucked in bed, and Lost is over. Mark is flipping through channels and I am updating my blog.

I'm thinking it's time for bed.

More later.

Details, Puh-lease!

First of all, thank you soooo much for your enthusiastic replies to our news. I can't tell you how much it means to me to have so much excitement and support in this new (scary) endeavor. I'm going to need all the help I can get, so thank you, thank you, thank you!! You are the best!!

Now, for some details because many of you have asked and inquiring minds want (no, MUST) know!! I know that when I'm in your shoes, I can't stand the suspense and the whole not knowing any of the scoop, so I will indulge you...why? Because I love you.

1. Was this a "happy mistake" (wink, wink)?

No, this baby was planned. I know that's going to be a lot of people's first question. Especially because there is such a huge gap between this baby and Avery...it will be 7 years by the time the due date comes around. In the back of my mind (and I think Mark's), I've always wanted more kids. After I had Avery and her birth experience was so traumatic, I wasn't quite sure. I knew it would be awhile. And then we hit some bumps along the road, I went back to work full-time, and then I really wasn't sure. But in the back of my mind the yearning and the desire was always there. I think the moment it started becoming more of a realistic possibility again was after I was laid off from Compuware and I was staying home again. The quietness of my days and the memory of having little ones in the house to care for and chase after came flooding back. I wanted that again, and knew I wasn't "done". Mark and I started discussing it again and decided that once we moved to Tonica, we would wait a few months and see how things went. Well, the Lord had a different plan for us and this baby because we must have gotten pregnant right after we moved here. I'm thinking early January. And here we are!!

2. How far along are you?

I am 14 weeks on Monday. My due date is September 22. The doc pushed it up by 2 weeks because the baby is already measuring big. (Technically should have been due October 2.) It seems for me they measure big in utero, but then are little tiny chickens at birth. He is already planning on delivering me at 36 weeks though.

3. How am I feeling?

Okay for the most part. Being pregnant at 35 is a lot different than being pregnant at 26 and 28 (like I was with the girls). I'm tired...all the time...and it never goes away. I'm in bed every night by 9 and usually asleep not too long after that. As far as the morning sickness goes, it actually comes at night. The first several weeks it would start around 4 or 5 pm, and continue all night. But I never puke. Thank heavens for that. Strong stomach I guess. Sometimes I think the release would be better than the nausea though. In the last several weeks, it has tapered off to just being nausious after dinner. But I feel good in the mornings. I get all of my stuff done in the mornings. (Which is sooooo unlike me normally.)

4. Are you still exercising (running)?

Yes, when I can. The first 3 months have been really good for that. But the past week I've had this nasty cold and haven't been able to do much. I've kept up my routine for the most part. I've tapered off the strength training and focused more on just cardio. It actually helps with the nausea and fatigue. I have had to slow down though. I'm more like jogging now instead of full-out running, and I take longer walks to warm up and cool down. But I'm trying to keep my mileage around 3-5 a few times a week. On the other days I do the elliptical or take a walk around Tonica. My goal is to keep fit this pregnancy. It's important for me to feel in control.

5. How did we tell the girls and what was their reaction?

I looked forward to this so much!! I wanted it to be special and couldn't wait to tell them!! But we decided to wait until after the first dr. appt with ultrasound to make sure everything was okay. We put an ultrasound picture in an envelope for each of them and had a normal FHE on a Monday night. I started by telling them that something very special was going to happen to our family this year and that they could find a clue in their envelopes. Maryn immediately thought we were going to Disney World again (that's how we surprised them last time). Avery got her envelope open first and said, "Mom's gonna have another baby." Maryn was so confused and got her envelope open and was still dumbfounded. I looked at her and said, "yep, Avery's right." They were so excited and jumped up and down and laughed and were really happy. We gave them each 3 carnations. One was a dark shade of pink, a lighter shade of pink, and white. The 3 flowers signify our 3 children...Maryn, Avery, and the white one for the baby because we don't know what it is yet. They can look at their flowers and see how each of them has a place in our family and that they are each beautiful and special. Carnations last a long time and it's been nice to have them around for awhile to remind us of our new little sibling that will be coming. Since that FHE, Maryn has gotten increasingly excited and brings me cards and notes home from school with drawings of babies and baby paraphanalia and name suggestions. Her faves are Bobby (Brady, what?) and "Abagal (sic)" for a girl. I can tell she is going to be my right hand man. She is very nurturing that way. I have seen it come out in her especially since Erin's boys have been born. She really loves that little Cole-ee-pokee and talks about her baby cousin to her friends often. Avery is also excited and likes to tease me about having a baby in my belly. I think she may be feeling a little more competetive though. It's understandable...she's been my baby for 6 years now.

6. Who did we tell first?

We told our girls first, then our parents, then our sibs, then our blogs. People at church still don't know, as well as co-workers and people on the street.

7. Am I showing?

I don't know. I have a pooch anyway, so I "show" all the time, even when I'm not pregnant. So far I've gained between 5 and 8 pounds. It came on fast and I think that means that it's mostly baby weight, but who knows?!? It could have something to do with the fact that I'm addicted to Casey's donuts and Arby's lately. My clothes still go on, but they are definitely getting snugger and the options are becoming limited. When can I switch to elastic???? Please somebody tell me! I am ready to embrace the stretchy pants!!

8. Am I a crazy hormonal emotional lunatic?

Surprisingly no. I have felt pretty in control. I have my moments but they are not too different from my norm. I still freak when stuff gets too messy, or I have to repeat myself a million times. The thing that amuses me is the fact that I full-on cry after watching "Baby Story" on TLC, and watching other random stuff on TV. It actually makes me laugh. Oh wait, crying and then laughing? Maybe I am crazy.

9. What do I need?

Everything! As many of you know we gave away, sold, got rid of all of our baby stuff after the Idaho move. We are starting over from scratch. I am hoping to hit some garage sales this summer and make some trips back to MI to "Baby, Baby" in Northville. I am going to look for some maternity clothes (yeah for stretchy pants) when I go back during Spring Break. But if you know of anyone getting rid of any baby stuff, send them my way.

10. What are my biggest fears?

That's a tough one. I am old(er) now, so that's a bit scary. We're starting over again and it's been awhile. Hopefully it will be like riding a bike though. I'm scared of having a yucky delivery like I did with Ave. But my doc knows the history and has reassured me he will do all he can to not have that happen again. I don't really know anybody around here...who will we call in the middle of the night to come stay with the girls? Who will help me after the baby comes home? Will the RS sisters (who live 30-45 minutes away) bring me dinners? Will I gain too much weight? Will the girls feel ignored and neglected? Will I get post-partum depression again? Will I be the oldest Mom at the baby's Kindergarten graduation? Then again, how old will I be at the baby's high-school graduation? And HOW ARE WE GOING TO PAY FOR ALL OF THIS?!?EEK! Lots to be nervous about, but I know it will all work out. I know that we are doing the right thing.

11. What are you most excited for?

A new baby of course!! I have watched nieces and nephews and babies of my friends be born and absolutely wanted to bundle them up and take them home with me. I love newborns, and the first year is my favorite!! I can't wait for the little fingers and toes and tiny newborn diapers and the smell of desitin and baby lotion and giving them baths in the sink and swaddling them tight like mummies and their coo's and squeaks and all of it!! Bring it on!! I know that eventually there will be potty training and climbing on top of the furniture and tantrums and dumping kitchen cupboards and running into the street when I'm not looking, but I think (and hope) that I can handle it. We are ready...we can't wait!!

Did I leave any questions out? If so, let me know in the comments.

Thanks again you guys!!

Welcome Indeed

A few weeks ago, my Mom wondered where the picture of our family in front of the Tonica sign with population "700" was. Since they were here visiting this past weekend, I figured it was a perfect opportunity to have my Dad take a picture of our family in front of the sign to signify our "welcome to Tonica".

And "Plus 5" doesn't mean that the new speed limit in town is 40, if ya know what I'm sayin'...wink, wink.

Please join us in welcoming a new member to our family...due in September 2009.

Okay, you can go ahead and pick up your jaws off the floor...the time neither one of us ever thought would happen again has finally come!! Can you believe it?!?

Needless to say, we are still shocked and excited for this long-awaited (you can say that again) and blessed event!! A new baby!! (Now Mark doesn't have to go around stealing everyone else's. It was becoming a bad habit.)

Less-Active

Okay, I know I suck. If you lived closer, you could beat me with a stick. I don't know why, or how this happened, but I have officially crossed over to the list of "less-active" bloggers. Oh the horror, the shame!!

I'm sorry. I've been chastised now by my Mother and my sister, and still I neglect the blog. My excuse? Well, this week I have been slammed with a not-so-pleasant cold. Avery brought this bug home, and I'm not really feeling too great. Also, my other lame excuse is that I don't know what to write about. I also don't really have a life anymore, but that's probably another post for another time. (Oh, the self pity!!)

So in light of that, I thought that I would at least post to let you know that I'm still alive, I'm still here (although extremely congested). Melanie suggested I start doing meme's (sp?) or something along those lines to get the juices flowing again. I think I will...but maybe starting tomorrow??!? HA!!

I will give you a little re-cap on our goings on though.

1. We enjoyed a visit from Mom and Dad this past weekend. I'm so glad they were able to make the drive. I have truly missed their company. Maybe I need to get out more often, but it was so nice to have people to talk to!! Thanks for coming Mom and Dad!!

2. Mark and I got more callings. I am now doing Activity Days and teaching the fourth Sunday in RS again. When I first joined the Plymouth Ward, this was my calling and it is my favorite. I am excited to be doing it again. My first lesson is this Sunday, wish me luck! Mark got called to teach the fourth Sunday lesson in EQ too. That should be interesting. He also got called to be the Executive Secretary to the Bishop. He'll do great. Our Bishop is really cool, and I think Mark will be a good balance to the Presidency.

3. We are excited for our trip to MI. in a couple weeks. We'll be coming for Cole's 1st bday party on Saturday the 28th. We may get to church on Sunday, but not sure. Me and the girls will also be coming for our Spring Break...the week of April 6th. I have some serious shopping to do...IKEA, Costco, Thrift stores, and Easter dress shopping. Let me know if you want to get lunch or something!!

Later dudes. Like I said, sorry for being so MIA lately. I'll try harder.

xoxo

One Year Older and Wiser Too...

...Haaaapy Birthday, (clap) TO YOU!!

Happy Birthday to my Dad, who is (71) today!! I don't think he would mind me telling you that. I think he wears the badge proudly, and he should. My Dad is like Dick Clark that way...he really doesn't show his true age. Many men his age are completely gray, and not getting around as easily. Not Dad. He's still only salt and peppery and is still getting around a lot!! As a matter of fact, I'd say he gets out and does more now than he did before he ever retired!!

I am grateful for my Dad. He is really a great person. He has a heart of gold. He is loving, forgiving, and kind. He is charitable, wise, and sensitive. He serves regardless of whether he'll get anything in return. He is a tremendous example to me and everyone he comes in contact with. He has served faithfully as the Stake Patriarch now for many years and it has really helped him to grow. I have seen him become more in tune with the Spirit and reverent in his disposition (not that he was ever that wild 'n' crazy, leave that up to his kids!), and he has truly dedicated himself to his calling. I know that it's not always easy to keep yourself open and worthy for that kind of communication with our Heavenly Father, and I think even he has learned many lessons along the way. I applaud him for never giving up.

The following picture is one of my favorite memories with my Dad. This is when I was a Merry Miss...remember that name? Thank heavens the primary did away with that name!! One of the activities you look forward to doing as a "Merry Miss" is having a "Daddy Daughter Dinner Date". And we did!! We started planning way in advance and came up with a Mexican theme. On the invitation it says, "come join me for some Mexicon (sic) food, ole? (meaning okay?)" I was hilarious. I think we even did some of the cooking. The night of the event, we dressed up in our Sunday clothes, and had a Mexican fiesta with our Dads at the Church. It was so fun, and I remember being so excited to have my Dad (who I had to share with many other siblings) to myself that night. He made me feel really special and like a little lady. I appreciate his sense of humor and his affection. Thanks for making such a fun memory for me Dad, and I wish you many more happy memories to come!!

circa 1985...that would have been the beginning of 6th grade for me.
P.S. And my brother Jeff will appreciate this picture because I'm wearing "the Charmer" necklace, which he openly mocked, but seriously coveted. HA! I wish I still had it, that thing was cool!!
